How to Build a Referral Only Business?

Don't make it the goal.

I kept my head down. Did good work. Showed up on time. Then repeated.

Word of mouth kept me so busy that one day I realized I didn't have to post on social media. I didn't need to focus on marketing.

The referral only business wasn't the goal.

It was the result.

I've noticed this pattern many times in my business.

I didn't set out to become a luxury photographer in Boston.

I focused on the work. Then the projects became larger, the homes became nicer, and people started referring me to higher-end clients.

Luxury wasn't the goal.

It happened naturally.

The same thing happened with pricing.

I didn't wake up one day and decide to charge more.

The experience improved. Demand increased.

The price increases followed.

The same thing happened with my schedule.

Most people assume growth means more clients.

At some point, I intentionally started working with fewer.

Eventually I realized I wasn't trying to build a bigger business.

I was trying to build a better one.

A business that gave me time to have a life outside of work.

Everyone is so focused on more.

More clients. More leads. More growth.

My business came full circle when I had fewer clients, better projects, more time, and higher prices.
